Description

These succulent tropical perennials are grown for their large, stiff, sword-shaped leaves arranged in tight rosettes. Flower stalks are rarely produced except on large, old plants. They can be grown from seed sown under glass in spring or propagated by planting the occasional suckers during spring or summer. Plants require a minimum temperature of 7C in winter. Agave desmettiana has large, strap-like leaves that bend backwards, and are partly folded together near the pointed, red-brown tip. They have a waxy bloom and smooth leaf texture. The flowers are on a stem that can be up to 3m. tall. New inflorescences looks somewhat like a new asparagus shoot, and the flowers, in clusters, are green-yellow Flowers appear when the plant is about 8-10 years old after which the plant dies (Encyclopedia, 2017)
